Well, it's been a while again. Anyway, I just returned home from two days spent in the strange and strangely proximate badland known as Orange County. While there, I rented a car, and Hertz was thoughtful enough to provide a pamphlet entitled "Tips for Safe Driving in California", which included the following [italics are mine]:
- California law requires that all vehicle occupants to use a seat belt..."
- We've got a lot of pedestrians and many cross in the middle of the street or against the light, so keep a sharp eye out for them...
- California has great freeways, but sometimes traffic on freeways stops suddenly and without warning!...
- Unfortunately, many Californians are in a hurry and usually ignore yellow lights (and sometimes red lights)...
- Right turn on red after stop is permitted at most intersections...
- Parking tickets and tow-away charges are very expensive in California...
- Please do not invite vandalism or theft by leaving valuables in sight...
- STAY TO THE RIGHT - In the United States, motor vehicles are operated on the right side of the road...
- Be aware of motorcycles - especially on freeways where motorcyclists are known to travel in between lanes.
Be afraid tourists and visitors! Be very afraid.
